You will be provided the data, tools, and staff resources to continue to grow our curriculum, develop courses, and lead physicians toward improved performance and better patient outcomes. Your expertise can help expand our education programs in needed areas for otolaryngologists, residents, and other allied health professionals.
Applications are being accepted online for positions on the following Education Committees:
- Core Otolaryngology & Practice Management Education Committee (COPMEC)
- Certificate Program for Otolaryngology Personnel (CPOP)

Education Committee Members
Volunteerism is the key to the Academy’s core function -- the education of fellow otolaryngologists, residents in training and our primary care colleagues. Participants in our medical education faculties serve 2-year (renewable) terms and earn Honor Award points each year. They also have the opportunity to meet and closely interact with like-minded peers in the United States and around the world.
If you have expertise in a particular field, time to commit to committee business and an active email address, then you are invited to apply using our online application form. Faculty members are expected to attend one meeting per year; usually held in conjunction with the Academy’s Annual Meeting in the fall. Additional meetings may be held by Internet or conference call.
Education Activity Development:
- Identify educational needs based on practice gaps associated with the committees’ clinical area of otolaryngology – head and neck surgery
- Develop educational objectives for an activity that would help close the identified gap
- Recommend specific educational topics to address the identified educational needs
- Plan and deliver educational activities that improve the member's performance in practice and aid in enhanced patient care
- Evaluate these educational activities to assess their effectiveness in improving the member's performance and improving patient outcomes
The development of most of our educational activities follows the aforementioned guidelines. The Home Study Course, AcademyU®, Patient of the Month Program and Clinical Otolaryngology OnLine are four activities that boast strong participation because of their robust content and effective design.
Home Study Course (HSC) is a study guide composed of eight sections issued over the course of two years. Each section consists of a Red Book of selected recent article reprints, a self-assessment exam, and a faculty symposium that summarizes correct answers with specific references to reprinted articles and faculty commentary. It is produced with our vendor, American College Testing (ACT). The production process for a section, from article selection to the distribution of the section packet, takes approximately two years.
The development of courses in
AcademyU involves identifying a need based on a specific practice gap, writing a course outline with learning objectives to address this need then writing content to ensure the course meets the learning objectives. You may participate at any level of this process. The AcademyU instructional design staff will work with you every step of the way. A typical course takes approximately 6 months to publish, with your greatest time commitment occurring within the first 30 to 60 days. As the production schedule is tight, it is essential that all authors adhere to the project deadlines.
Patient Management Perspectives in Otolaryngology (PMP) simulates real-life clinical decision-making by engaging learners in an interactive clinical case study. Committee members work close with our vendor BC Decker, Inc. to develop content for a specific course topic. The content includes a detailed management discuss and reference materials for future study.
Clinical Otolaryngology OnLine (COOL) enables medical students and allied health professionals to tackle patient scenarios through an interactive web-based application. Using authoring methods similar to those of AcademyU, authors will help identify a need, formulate learning objectives and ultimately deliver content that focuses on a realistic patient scenario.
